The Internet of Everything is almost certainly going to affect, well, everything; including how companies tell their stories to consumers. Digital signage smartens up the old concept of billboards and posters with added interactivity and connectivity.
Think of the possibilities. Suddenly, the common sights around town like movie posters and bus schedules come alive. Imagine digital mirrors that allow people to try on different outfits, in-store displays that show Minority Report-style personalized offers, or even posters for stores that let customers make purchases right there. Qualcomm Technologies is teaming up with eInfochips to design and build the software and hardware infrastructure that will lay the groundwork for intelligent displays just like these.
Qualcomm Snapdragon processors are engineered to support the performance and connectivity for digital displays and multimedia players alike, powering enhanced audio and 4K Ultra HD video for vivid visuals. Live panoramic cameras can capture 360-degree views of the surrounding area while, behind the scenes, the Snapdragon processor is designed to let the display network connect quickly to a database that feeds it information in real-time. This is a good example of how our Snapdragon processors are used in devices beyond everyday smartphones; embedded computing grants common objects enhanced awareness and interactivity.
The digital signage industry blends all sorts of cutting edge technologies. Just like with computers and mobile devices, touch screens offer far more interactivity. Technologies like near-field communication (NFC) let an audience further engage with signs, and even retrieve information like video or music downloads just by tapping their smartphones to the surface. Sensors can be embedded in displays to gather and process data, and react accordingly. For example, temperature, atmospheric, and carbon monoxide sensors can provide local information or even advance alerts to public risk factors.
Another clever application turned these displays into interactive games. Red Bull gave users a chance to guide a biker with motion tracking and gesture recognition. The machine offered players a free drink if and when they finished. The use cases are as numerous as your, let’s call them, “use needs.” Brands can use digital signage to impress, but also come to understand their audience better. Through interactivity, these intelligent billboards and media players show whether the information is reaching the right people, and provide quantified data points on—perhaps more importantly—whether people are enjoying the content.
Snapdragon processors are designed to efficiently power the video analytics and the speedy sensor networks that draw all this information and deliver it to the analytics machines. These displays can come in all shapes and sizes. Some use single panels while others use wall-sized displays for more immersive experiences. Think of it, in the age of Internet of Everything, everything can be fun and intelligent, even the everyday posters along our morning commutes. Signs sure are looking up.
